CAGE DIVING

Great White Shark Cage Diving

Shark cage DivingShark cage diving started in South Africa in 1991 in Gansbaai at Dyer Island. For 4 years we worked at Dyer Island in what was at the time an unspoilt setting. With the advent of large scale shark cage diving came a very different atmosphere and so we chose to move to Seal Island in 1995.

Shark cage diving Gansbaai

At the time when we arrived at Seal Island nobody was aware of the flying great whites and so when we witnessed this amazing behaviour it instantly became apparent that not only could you cage dive and view sharks at Seal Island as at Gansbaai, but you could also see this spectacular breaching behaviour. What was also advantageous for us is that fact that Seal Island lies sheltered in False Bay only 35 minutes from Cape Town and is not buffeted by the huge open seas that lash Dyer Island in the prime shark viewing winter months.

Cage diving with Great White Sharks

Great White SharkIn order to be able to cage dive we use a specially constructed steel cage with viewing ports that floats on the surface of the water. The shark cage is connected to the back of the boat. Sharks are drawn closer to the boat using small amounts of tuna for bait. No sharks are purposefully fed and no sharks are pulled directly towards the cage as we do not want to injure these animals in any way. Divers do however get a great opportunity to view the sharks in their environment as they gracefully glide by or curiously inspect the cage. Divers can also take their own pictures from the shark cage. Our boat is purposefully licensed for less than any other shark cage diving boat in South Africa to ensure everybody gets the best possible chance to dive with the sharks for as long as possible and that each guest has a personalized experience.

Safety is of utmost importance to us.

All shark diving is done under the auspices of experienced crew who have first aid & oxygen management, scuba & commercial skippers’ qualifications and are aware of the likely behaviour of sharks around the cage.
