If you are a serious shark lover and if it is a life’s dream to experience the Great White Shark, then the best way to do this is to book a longer stay.
Shark Seasons

Sharks are highly seasonal animals and it is important to know upfront what you can expect to see so as not to be disappointed. As sharks are completely wild sightings are not guaranteed but the information below should give you a good guideline on what you can expect to see.
Great White Sharks
The high season for great white sharks at Seal Island is mid April to the middle of September.
These are the winter months in Cape Town and as soon as the water temperature cools down migratory fish species leave False Bay. The seals at Seal Island therefore become the only food source for the Great white sharks and this is why they can be so easily found during these months.
During the high season you should have a great opportunity of seeing the white sharks breach out of the water to hunt seals, as well as have excellent close-up views of them when we attract the sharks to the boat for closer viewing as well as diving.
Although we see all the different behavior throughout the season April, May and June are usually better for seeing sharks around the boat which is great for cage diving.
July and August are the two better months for seeing intense natural predation (sharks attempting to catch seals).
The beginning half of September is usually still good for seeing natural predations but sightings around the boat can start to slow down.
The low season is October to March and sightings are about 50%. Breaching sightings are highly unlikely.
We do have another alternative this time of year and that is to book our guests with an operator that we recommend in Gansbaai (2.5 hours from Cape Town and transport can be arranged). The season here is a little longer and there is a better chance of seeing sharks during the low season. The operator that we use operates the smallest groups for the best experience and operates in the most eco-friendly manner. There are 8 other operators in this area and it can be confusing as to which is the best company to book with, so this is where we can advise you.
Pelagic Sharks
These sharks are found in the Augulhas current. During the winter months the current is too far off shore and not easy to reach therefore the high season is during our summer months when the current is close to Cape Point.
These months are December to May. Our success rate is 90%.
The warm water is closest in December and January and we also seem to see the most variety of sharks including occasionally large smooth and scalloped Hammerhead sharks.
May is a great month to plan a combination of Pelagic shark trips and Great White shark trips.
